UEFA Nations League Semifinals – Preview & Team Info

Four of the most exciting national teams in Europe are about to fight each other for the title in the second edition of the UEFA Nations League. It is clear that Portugal will not defend their crown as Cristiano Ronaldo & company failed to make it to the final four.

The teams that have managed to find their place in the semis are Italy, Spain, France, and Belgium. We are in for some spectacular semifinals on Wednesday and Thursday. To make these clashes of the titans even more interesting, we have prepared some interesting data for you. 

WEDNESDAY

20:45 – Italy vs Spain

  • Italy beat Spain on penalties in the semifinal of the Euro 2020 in July this year (a 1-1 draw in the regular time)
  • They are the reigning European champions, having beaten England on penalties in the final at the Wembley
  • Roberto Mancini’s men are unbeaten in 37 consecutive games in all competitions
  • They won four and drew two of six World Cup qualifiers (for the World Cup in Qatar 2022)
  • Azzurri conceded only one goal in these six games
  • Ten of the last eleven matches Italy played in all competitions ended with fewer than three goals scored (including the Euro 2020 semifinal against Spain)

  • They reached the semifinal after beating Croatia and Switzerland in the knockout stage
  • They won four, drew one, and lost one of six World Cup qualifiers
  • The lone defeat came away at Sweden (2-1)
  • Luis Enrique will be without important players such as Dani Olmo, Pedri, Thiago Alcantara, and Alvaro Morata
  • Spain topped their Nations League group thanks to three home wins
  • They were winless away from home in the competition, drawing 1-1 to Germany and Switzerland, and falling 1-0 against Ukraine

THURSDAY

20:45 – Belgium vs France

  • Belgium stormed past England, Iceland, and Denmark to top their Nations League group with five wins in six matches
  • They have scored at least two goals in five of these six matches, netting also one goal in the lone defeat to England (2-1)
  • The Red Devils had a perfect record of four wins in four matches at the Euro 2020 before falling 1-2 to latter champions Italy in the quarterfinal
  • Belgium have also scored in all of their five Euro 2020 outings
  • They won five and drew of six World Cup qualifiers as well, scoring at least three goals in three of the last four matches along the way
  • Dries Mertens is the main absentee, but the important thing is that Roberto Martinez can count on his main stars Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku

 

  • France also topped their respective Nations League group with five wins in six games (ahead of Croatia, Portugal, and Sweden)
  • However, they won just one of four matches at the Euro 2020
  • Les Bleus were stopped in the last 16 round by Switzerland after penalty shootout (a 3-3 draw after extra-time)
  • Both teams scored in three of four games they played at the European Championship
  • Both teams also scored in two of the last three World Cup qualifiers France played (against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Ukraine)
  • France won three and drew three of six World Cup qualifiers so far
  • Didier Deschamps will be without N’Golo Kante, while Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema are expected to lead the line up front
